A late 19th Century illustration of a meeting of the Estates-General (États Généraux), a representative assembly of the Ancien Régime, the closest it had to a congress or parliament. The last Estates-General before the French Revolution was held in 1614 as Louis XIV considered it unnecessary in an age of absolute monarchical power. The Estates-General would play a pivotal role in the revolutionary events of 1789.
