Copper engraving, unattributed, with hand colouring entitled \The First Court, Christ College\". Produced circa 1830-1850. This was the view out from the entrance to Darwin's rooms ( below his windows on the second floor). Darwin occupied student rooms which had once been those of the Reverend William Paley, of 'Paley's Watch' evolutionary fame. The chapel window, on the far right of the print, today has stained glass windows depicting these two alumni. Charles Darwin was a theology student of Christ's College from 1828-1831 and viewed it as a formative period in every way. Through his tutor, botany professor Henslow, he was able to go on the Beagle voyage."
