Moorland management by controlled burning

Moorland management by controlled burning of heather. These controlled fires are restricted by law to the period between October and April. It is undertaken by moor keepers and is done on a rotational basis. The heather roots are undamaged and the burning makes the germination process quicker. Skillful burning of moorland which means various aged heathers offers a wider variety of habitat for wildlife.
