REV, GEORGE A. DEMERS The affairs of the Catholic parishin Newmarket are at present underthe care of Eev. Father George Ar-thur Demers, who was born at Levis,P, Q., February 10, 1876. His fa-ther was Edward and his motherAlma (Couture). The father was an. Rev. George In 1900 His Excellency GovernorJordan appointed him judge of thePolice Court of Newmarket, whichposition he still holds. He married Nellie, daughter ofJohn and Bertha A. (Bruce) have five children living and onedeceased. A. Demers attorney-at-law, and his brother, Cleo-phas, is a priest, the beloved pastor ofthe church at Somersworth. Fond ofhis nephew (the subject of thissketch), he assumed the responsibilityof his education and the youth was or-dained from his church. He was ed-ucated at Levis College and the Uni-versity of St. Joseph, N. B., and re- 106 Newmarket on the Lamprey eeivecl his theological training at theGrand Seminary of the Sulbicien Fa-thers at Montreal. He was ordained,December 20, 1901, by the late BishopBradley. In May, 1907, he was assigned tothis charge, and during his brief stayhas succeeded in paying off every dol-lar of indebtedness, having raisedsomething more than three thousandfive hundred dollars for this purpose.
