Berlin, Toms Hütte housing estate, modern housing estate using variety of size, colours & shapes to avoid monotony. The estate, incorporating social housing , was built between 1926 and 1932, by architects Bruno Taut & Hugo Häring & Rudolph Salvisberg and financed by the GEHAG (Housing Cooperative for Savings and Construction). It was named after Harriet Beecher Stowe’s 1853 novel, ’Uncle Tom’s Cabin’. The housing blocks incorporate space that is broken up at intervals with paths, roads, woods and parks. The mechanical lines of the buildings are given individuality using details such as asymmetric windows and doors. The estate included the U-Bahn station and the Shopping street, Onkel Toms Hutte, which supplied provisions to the local residents. The Estate was declared a National Monument in 1995.
