Bacterial ribosome and protein synthesis. Molecular model showing a bacterial ribosome reading an mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid) molecule and synthesising a protein (white strand). Ribosomes are composed of protein and RNA (ribonucleic acid). They are the site of translation, the process of protein synthesis. In bacteria each ribosome consists of a small (30S) subunit and a large (50S) subunit. They are also a target for antibiotic drugs.
