Schlossplatz, Stuttgart King Wilhelm 1 Jubilee Column, Kunstmuseum Modern art gallery and Königsbau shopping mall
Stuttgart's Palace Square was originally part of the Ducal garden and served as a military parade ground. In the 19th century it was converted to a Baroque park used by the townspeople. The centre of the park houses the Jubilee column commemorating the 25th anniversary (1841) of King Wilhelm I of Württemberg. The statues and reliefs at the base of the column were made by the sculptor Theodor Wagner and the 5m high statue of Concordia topping the column is by Ludwig von Hofer. The park is surrounded by historic and cultural buildings. The Old Palace, originally the seat of the first Counts and Dukes of Württemberg, now houses the Württemberg State Museum. The New Palace built between 1746 to 1807, is a mixture of Baroque, Rococo, Empire and Classicism and until the second half of the 19th century, this was the royal residence of the kings of Württemberg. The palace now contains ministries of the Baden-Württemberg state government and state reception rooms. The striking Museum of Art with its 27m high glass cube has a collection of over 15000 works dating from the 18th century until the present day, Diagonally opposite is the Kunstgebäude gallery, its cupola surmounted by a golden stag, where regular exhibitions of contemporary art are staged by the Württemberg Art Association. The original building was destroyed in WW II and rebuilt to plans by the architect Paul Bonatz The entrance to the Königsbau, Stuttgart's oldest shopping arcade is found on the square as well as a band stand.
