THE eminent author of the Essay on the Human Understanding was boraAugust 29, 1632, at Wrington, in Somersetshire, England, Lockes father hadbeen bred 9 lawyer, and when the civil war broke out, in 1643, he evinced thecharacter of his political principles by heading a company in the service ofthe parliament. Locke himself received his education first at Westminster, andafterward at Christ-church college, Oxford, where he took the degree of mas^ter of arts in 1658, and then proceeded to prepare himself for the medical pro-fession. With the exception of about twelve months which he spent on thecontinent, in the capacity of secretary to the British envoy at the court ofthe elector of Brandenburg, he continued his medical studies without interrup-tion till the year 1666, when he became known to the celebrated earl of Shaftes-bury, then Lord Ashley.
