Fakir with a pin piercing his cheek ( India)
Fakirs are muslim men who dedicate their life to Allah. They are wanderers who live on charity. They are not magicians ; they do not perform miracles such as lying on a bed of nails, eating fire, raising bodies,...even if some of them do mortifications. They are condemned by orthodox Islam which reproach their bohemian style of life, their lack of sense of responsibility ( they do not work, most of them have no children). Through the year, many of them gather to the mausoleum of the sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti at Ajmer ( Rajasthan). Called "Gharib Nawaz" ( the protector of the poor), he is their patron saint.
