This map of the coast of Africa is a replication of the edition of the Flemish cartographer Mercator (1512-1594), following the layout of Ptolemy I's map in 150. It shows the extent of the voyage of the Carthaginian navigator Hanno (thought to have lived c. 470 ) from the Pillars of Hercules (modern-day Strait of Gibraltar) to what is now called Sierra Leone.
