Medieval merchant counting money using tally sticks

A medieval merchant reconciles his accounts at the end of a day's trading using tally sticks. A financial contract is written in ink on one side and the edge cut into a unique pattern with a knife. The tally stick is then split in half to give 2 matching slivers of wood, which can be paired up again to prove the contract.
