Woolly mammoth tooth. Fossilised specimen of a woolly mammoth (Mammuthus sp.) molar tooth, showing the ridged flat chewing surface. The woolly mammoth was a member of the elephant family, with long curved tusks and a covering of long hair. The woolly mammoth lived throughout the northern plains. It became extinct around 10,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age, probably due to a combination of climate change, human hunting and disease. Several well preserved carcasses have been found frozen in Siberia and North America.
