BERLIN, GERMANY. Part of the Berlin Wall memorial at Bernauerstrasse. 2012.

Bernauer Strasse was the site of the first permanent section of the Berlin Wall, which was begun on 15th August 1961 (with prefabricated concrete blocks replacing barbed wire which had been put in place two days earlier). The mural on the wall in this picture shows Peter Leibing's iconic photograph of East German soldier Hans Conrad Schumann discarding his gun as he jumps to freedom over the wire dividing East and West Berlin.
