Walt Disney Concert Hall, Downtown Los Angeles - Exterior. Architect: Gehry Partners
The Walt Disney Concert Hall is the home of the Los Angeles Philarmonic and fourth venue of the Music Centre of Los Angeles County. It is situated in the historic Bunker Hill section of downtown Los Angeles. A large portion of the site is dedicated to an urban park with expansive public gardens and ornamental landscaping. The curved exterior of the building is clad in stainless steel panels. The 2265-seat auditorium was designed by Frank Gehry in collaboration with Nagata Acoustics. Audience members surround the orchestra platform for an interactive and intimate experience and a pipe organ occupies a central position between the seating blocks and the rear of the stage. The organ was designed by Los Angeles organ designer Manuel Rosales (sound design) and Gehry (organ form design). The hardwood walls and curved ceiling of the auditorium are made of Douglas Fir, the same wood often used on the backs of cellos and violas. A large 36-foot-high rear window and eight skylights allow natural light to enhance daytime concerts. The other main spaces are the Atrium Reception Hall with a street-level glass facade; the large Pre-Concert Foyer which accommodates up to 600 people for a variety of activities; the Green Room, designed to encourage interaction between audience members, artists and musicians; the Founders Room which provides special amenities for the Music CentreÆs major donors and guests. There are also two outdoors amphitheatres, one of which is a 300-seat theatre for children. Opening October 2003. Estimated cost $ 274 million USD.
