John Howard, first Duke of Norfolk, c1850. Known as Jack of Norfolk, John Howard (c1430-1485) was Earl Marshal of England from 1483. He was killed fighting on the side of Richard III, the Yorkist king, at the Battle of Bosworth Field, 22 August 1485. This was the decisive battle in the Wars of the Roses, the struggle between the houses of and Lancaster for the throne of England.
