Hewas a noted orator from the South, had in the town, a guest at Fisters WashingtonHouse, which was long the favorite stop-ping place of wayfaring statesmen. After the railroad came there were yetother great men who honored the town withtheir presence. In October, 1873, the greateditor, Horace Greeley, then Democraticcandidate for the presidency of the UnitedStates, was the guest of Col. T. D. Fisterfor two days, while he made two addresses,one at the fair and one in the NormalSchool. In 1874, the Hon. Alexander Ramsey,once teacher in Kutztown, in the olil Frank-. been colonel of a Kentucky regiment, hadfought along with General Harrison againstthe Indians, and had gained fame becauseof his reputed killing of the great chief,Tecumseh. (Was he the Buckeye Black-smith spoken of on a preceding page?) In 1836 Kutztown was visited by Gover-nor Joseph Ritner, the Hon. H. A. Muhlen-berg, and General William Henry from Easton they were entertainedat the Fauber Hotel. In the evening aftersupper, Old Tippecanoe made a two-hourspeech, after which he was entertained ata banquet at which Mine Host Fauber pre-sented a Spohn Seicha with a red applein his mouth which the old hero enjoyedheartily.
