Moody, afterwardsSecretary of the Navy, Attor-ney-General and Justice ofthe Supreme Court of theUnited States, was one of theCommittee appointed to pre-sent these gifts. These presentswere received with a great dealof ceremony at a large recep-tion held in the Town Halland acknowledgment was sentto our city later. Details ofthese English proceedings andof the Haverhill celebrationare given in The Story of aNew England Town pub-lished in 1891, which gives allthe correspondence and an ac-count of Mr. Gurteens visit,with copies of articles fromthe papers of Haverhill, Eng-land. The Haverhill PublicLibrary treasures several auto-graphed letters of Mr. Gurteenwhich were sent to residents. From a photograph Kindness John G. Moulton, Esq. MEMORIAL TABLET IN THE PARISH CHURCH,HAVERHILL, ENGLAND, erected to Rev. John Ward, grandfather of Rev. John Wardwho was the first minister of Haverhill, Massachusetts. Adrawing made from the original tablet is owned by the Haver-hill, Massachusetts, Public Library, and is loaned to theHaverhill Historical Society. The inscription is in the text.
