The sterile fronds may bedistinguished from those of the cinnamon fern by nothaving retained, like those, a tuft of wool at the base ofeach pinna. Besides, in Claytons fern the fronds arebroader, blunter and thinner in texture, and the segmentsmore rounded; the fronds are also more inclined to curveoutwards. They turn yellow in the fall, at times flood-ing the woods with golden light, l)ut soon smitten l)y theearly frosts they wither and disappear. The interruptedfern is rather common in damp, rocky woods and jiastures;
