This image may not be used to state or imply ESA endorsement of any company or product Martian plain. Mars Express perspective view of part of the Elysium Planitia region of Mars. This area is flat and covered in dust, with two impact craters at centre right and upper right. It is thought that this area, a few tens of kilometres across, is a dust-covered frozen sea. This area is just north of the Martian equator. Mars is a cold desert world, with an atmosphere of carbon dioxide and no liquid water. Data obtained from the High Resolution Stereo Camera soon after Mars Express began operating in December 2003.
