Colposcopy of severely dysplastic cervix. Colposcopic image of a pre-cancerous human cervix showing severe abnormality (dysplasia, CIN 3). Dysplastic

Colposcopy of severely dysplastic cervix. Colposcopic image of a pre-cancerous human cervix showing severe abnormality (dysplasia, CIN 3). Dysplastic areas have been stained with dilute acetic acid, appearing pale and irregular in the dark pink, doughnut-shaped cervix (at centre). There is bleeding from the central cervical canal. The cervix is lined by multi-layered, skin- like cells (stratified squamous epithelium) which join to a single layer (simple columnar epithelium) in the canal. The pre-cancerous changes occur at this junction and may be detected by a smear. Treatment is by biopsy, surgery and/or radiotherapy.
