In 1855 he resigned the activemanagement of the Bemis & Call Company to his son,W. Chaplin Bemis, and Amos Call, On account of hishealth, which had been much impaired by his active andclose attention to his large business interests, he retiredfrom business in 1868. In politics Mr. Bemis was a Whig,until 1838, when he imbibed the principles of Jefferson andJackson Democracy, and forever after was a sterling andaggressive Democrat. In November, 1828, he married Julia E. Skeel, daugh-ter of Otis Skeel of Chicopee. Mr. Bemis died February12, 1875, aged 73 years.
