The growth has considerably distended theouter part of the tube, the wall of which is intact except at the abdominalostium. Orthmann reported the first authentic case ofcancer of the tube in 1888, and in 1910 Doran brought the numberof his collated cases to 100, since when about forty more cases havebeen recorded. Clinical Features. Adenocarcinoma is more frequently bilateralthan is simple papilloma. It especially affects women at or aboutthe time of the climacteric. The age of the patient from whom thespecimen shown in Fig. 348 was removed was 58 years. Doranstates that parous women are the most subject to this disease. Pain is very common but not an invariable symptom. It appearsto be due to increased tension produced by retained secretion and is NEW GROWTHS OF THE TUBES 639
