Treated diabetic retinopathy. Ophthalmoscope view of the retina of the eye of a diabetic patient who suffered retinopathy, after laser treatment. Normal retina is orange (at centre left). To the right of this, blood vessels enter the eye at the location of the rounded optic nerve. The dark areas are pigmentation which derive from retinal pigment epithelium. Large yellow areas are chorio- retinal atrophy exposing the sclera which appears white or yellow depending on degree of atrophy. This atrophy is a result of laser treatment burns. Diabetic retinopathy describes the damage to the blood supply of the retina as a complication of diabetes. Laser treatment seals the blood vessels.
