On the breaking out of the war in April, 1861, at theinstance of Governor Morton, he went to Philadelphiaand made contracts for the equipment of Indiana the designation of Governor Morton and General J. , in Jul}-, 1861, he was appointed by PresidentLincoln captain and a quartermaster of volunteers, andserved in the Cheat Mountain (Va.) campaign. In 1862 he had charge of Post Gauley Bridge, WestVirginia, until August, when he was ordered to the staffof General Pope, commanding the Army of the Potomac
