Merchant Marine Inspection. A Coast Guard marine inspector crawls out of a boiler after thoroughly checking the interior for defects aboard the passenger excursion ship City of Norfolk during one of the periodical inspections. In addition to checking the metal material of the boiler, he examines the main steam piping, valves, gauges, and other connected appurtenances, to see that they conform to safety regulations. A hydrostatic test reveals whether the pressure is as determined to be safe for this vessel by the Coast Guard.
