Colon, light micrograph

Light micrograph of a section through the large intestine, or colon. The lumen (interior) of the colon is at top. The colon is lined with intestinal villi containing crypts of Lieberkuhn, elongated pockets that lie in the vascular submucosa (pink). These glands contain two types of cells: goblet cells, which secrete mucus (red) into the colon which aids the movement of faeces; and absorptive columnar epithelial cells, which absorb water from the faeces. Magnification: x20 when printed at 15 centimetres wide.
