Korea: Jang Yeon-hong (1911-), Kisaeng entertainer and courtesan, c. 1930. Jang Yeon-hong was a kisaeng from Pyongyang known for her beauty even from a young age. Born into a wealthy family that went bankrupt, she was sent to the Gisaeng Pyongyang School, and became nationally famous by the time she was 14. She went on to study abroad in Shanghai, after which there are no further records of her. Kisaeng (also spelled gisaeng), sometimes called ginyeo, were female official prostitutes or entertainers. Kisaeng are artists who work to entertain others, such as the yangban aristocracy and kings.
