Results Some average results and figures obtained in actualservice from some fifty feed water heaters of both theclosed and open types, operated in freight and passengerservice are given in the following table and curves. Thecurves shown in figure No. 5, which are of a representa-tive run, show the heat transfer obtained from the ex-haust steam through the heater to the delivery water. Table No. 1 gives the results of a number of typicalruns. No doubt some may take exception to the highpercentage of savings shown, since they are so much inexcess of possible theoretical calculations. In all cases, however, the coal and water were carefully records were kept, and they are borne out bycheck records that are constantly being made and by fuel. Fig. No. 12—Coffin Pump average obtained in everyday service as shown in tableNo. 1. Effect on Terminal and Shop Facilities There is another phase of the subject that should beconsidered equally as well as the saving in fuel and thetrain operating benefits, and that is the effect on terminal Table No. 1—Results Obtained on a Xumber of Typical Run; TypeofService Engine Fast Passenger 4-6-2 Local Passenger 4-6-0 Fast Freight 2-8-0 Fast Freight 2-8-0 Slow Freight 2-8-0 Per Cent 1 lent Increase Decrease m in Evapo- Fuel Con- Pounds Coal ration sumption per Square Foot FeedWater FeedWater Grate per Hour Length Weight Heater Heater Feed of Run Train o ver ■ iver \\ ater in Miles In Tons Injector Injector Heater Injector 186 650 117 284 - 117 1,590 117 1,540 72 1,180 consumption statistics.
