The White Hart pub, Fyfield, built in the reign of Henry VI by the executors of Sir John Golafre, Lord of Fyfield Manor, who died in 1442, leaving money for the establishment of a charity to be known as the House or Hospital of St John the priest was required to say masses for the soul of the founder in the Chantry chapel attached to the parish church where Golafre's monument can still be seen. The existing building is one erected by Golafre's executors soon after his death. It consisted of a hall and kitchen, with accommodation for the priest in the two storied wing at the west end. The priest's lower room is now part of the restaurant. The kitchen is now the bar. The almsmen had their meals in the hall and may have slept in a room over the kitchen. Photo:Jeff Gilbert
