The building was used for a timein 1849 as the city post-office during the cholera epidemicof that year; later it was used for municipal purposes. 130 The Worlds Greatest Street It gave way in 1852 to the ugly, square brown-stonebuilding now occupying the site which is used for theCity Court, and which was formerly occupied by thecriminal courts until the construction of the new CriminalCoiirt building on Centre Street in 1894. The plans callfor a ten-story structure, equipped with modem sanitaryand ventilating systems, in which the present buildingis sadly lacking, and incorporating the present chief point to recommend this site is that the cityowns the land. The lovers of the City Beautiful at The City Hall Park 131 once attacked the plan, and maintained that it wouldbe cheaper for the city in the end to spend several millionsfor a new site, rather than still further to encroach uponthe limits of the Park.
