In the latter part of the winter of 1862 General Sherman wasorganizing a force at Paducah, Ky., to ascend the Tennessee Riverand move upon Corinth, Miss. The 53rd Regiment joined Sherman at Paducah in February,1862, and became a part of his division. They remained at Padu-cah until March. During this month they ascended the Ten-nessee River, disembarking at Pittsburg Landing. Near this placethe battle of Shiloh was fought April 6th and 7th. This wasGeneral Jones first battle, and for gallant conduct he was pro-moted to the Colonelcy of his regiment, and immediately assumedcommand of GENERAL WELLS S. JONES. During the summerand fall of 18(32 he was engaged in campaigning in SouthwesternTennessee and Northern Mississippi. In , 18Go, he joinedGeneral Shermans command at Vicksburg, and participated inthe siege and capture of Vicksburg. After the surrender of Vicksburg he joined in the pursuit ofJohnstons army, and participated in the siege and capture ofJackson, Miss. In July he returned to Vicksburg, where his com-mand remained until September, when they ascended the Missis-sippi to Memphis, and marched across the country to Chattanooga,Tenn., where he, with his regiment, participated i
