Olympicene, IBM research. Sealed glass jar containing the organic carbon molecule Olympicene in a powder form. This molecule consists of five rings joined in a shape that resembles the Olympic Rings. It was conceived to mark the London 2012 Olympics, and its synthesis was announced in 2012. Here it is being investigated by IBM researchers who imaged it using atomic non-contact atomic force microscopy. The power is actually white, but slowly changes colour over time due to exposure to light. Photographed in March 2012, at IBM Research-Zurich, Switzerland.
