The structure of myoglobin was first discovered in 1962 by Perutz and Kendrew of Cambridge University, who were awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry for their work on myoglobin and the closely related Ihaemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying molecule of blood. The structure of the large & highly complex molecule was obtained in 3-D using X-ray analysis in conjunction with a knowledge of the amino acid sequence - the sequence in which the component parts of the molecule are arranged.
