One of the two searchlight positions at Brownstone Battery, a WW2 coastal defence built to protect Dartmouth, the Dart estuary and Start Bay. The searchlights were positioned half way down the cliff face looking out to sea. They were built in 1942 in response to the threat from German "E" boatsThe buildings were of reinforced concrete and manned by teams of 5 men working shifts. Above the searchlights were two 6 inch guns with emplacements and ammunition store. The guns were from a WW1 battleship but could still fire a shell 14 miles.
