Annals of tropical medicine and parasitology . We may now consider the cases assigned to Groups II and IV ofTable II. The average size of the cysts for the cases in Group IIvaries between i6T/i for Case 9 and i//.u for Case 16. If weassume that a size-strain of E. coli exists between those justdescribed, the average size of its cysts would approximate 17/i. Anapproximation to this has been obtained for Cases 13 and 14, wherethe average sizes are i68// and I72// respectively. The figuresobtained for the measurements of the two hundred cysts from 266 Case 13 are as follows, and they are presented graphically infig. 2: — Dimensions of cvsts in microns. 1275 13-5 14-25 15-0 1575 i6-5 17-25 i8-o 18-75 19-5 20-25 -^^ 21-75 22-5 Av. size Case 13 I 5 12 31 37 24 23 20 26 10 6 3 I I i6-8/< The feature of the curve is the presence of two apices; it is notunimodal as are the curves shown in fig. i. The suggestion at once. 1-2// 13-5 15 occurs that the curve for Case 13 may represent a mixed cystpopulation—that m this case the infection consisted of two strainsco-existing in the same patient. Indeed, it seems probable that thiscase was infected with the two size-strains already defined. Whetherthis is the correct interpretation of the curve or not is very difficultto decide, and unfortunately the number of cysts measured is rather 267 small, but the following consideration lends some support to theidea. The dotted curve in fig. 2 represents the figures obtained byadding together the first two hundred cysts measured from Cases 3and 22 respectively. The composition of this dotted curve istherefore known. The measurements it represents are those oftwo hundred cysts of the i^/u strain and two hundred of the 18*75//strain. It will be seen that the curve so obtained is bimodal, andit is believed that the curve for Case 13 represents a similar condition, namely, a mixed cyst population. Possibly all the cases
