The N gate of Housesteads Roman fort, Northumberland, England, UK, looking NE to Hadrian's Wall crossing the Knag Burn in the hollow (centre middle distance). A loop of the Roman military way meets the Knag Burn gate through the Wall, crosses the stream & leads to the fort's E gate. The gates at Housesteads consisted of two arched portals with an upper storey flanked by square towers. A large stone water tank stands against the rear of the W tower of the N gate. Housesteads is the most complete example of a Roman fort to be seen in Britain, one of the original 12 (eventually 16) permanent forts on Hadrian's Wall it was built around AD124. It housed 1,000 infantry auxiliaries from a unit originally raised in eastern Belgium & was later reinforced by cavalry. There was an extensive civil settlement S of the 5-acre fort.
