Pall-mall, a lawn game that was mostly played in the 16th and 17th centuries, being played in St James' Park in London, England. The precursor to croquet, the Pall Mall court was laid out in 1630 by a Frenchman named John Bonnealle. The following year a house was built on the land, but demolished by Candlemas Day, 1632. The pall-mall court was rebuilt at the site and Samuel Pepys's entry in his diary for 2 April 1661 records that he went "into St. James's Park, where I saw the Duke of York playing at Pelemele, the first time that I ever saw the sport".
