Thirlwall Castle near Greenhead in Northumberland lies next to Tipalt Burn. The motte and bailey castle was built by John Thirlwall in the 14th Century as protection for his family. The castle is built from sandstone blocks that were quarried by the Romans to build Hadrian's Wall
