In this profession, and in public life, he rapidly roseto the highest eminence; and in 1619 he was made lord high chancellor ofEngland, and created Baron Verulam, to which title was added, the followingyear, that of Viscount St. Albans. Bacons political course, up to this- time,had not been very remarkable for disinterestedness or independence ; and itwas destined to terminate suddenly in disgrace and sorrow.
