Trongsa Dzong, built in 1644, is perhaps the most spectacularly sited dzong in Bhutan and lies on the road between eastern and western Bhutan. It is the ancestral home of the Bhutanese Royal Family. Dzongs form both the administrative and religious centres of their districts and within the dzongs the monasteries will always have a golden pinnacle on the roof and a maroon band. The monk body of Trongsa Dzong spend the winter months in Trongsa and migrate to Bumthang for the summer period.
