Remarks—In this amputation, attention should be given to the lengthot the stump before commencing the operation—a long stump beingrequisite for the attachment of an artificial leg, while if the stump is torest on the peg, the bone should be divided within three fingers breadthot the tubercle of the tibia, for the reasons before assigned. The remarks inrelation to the advantages of a stump formed by the circular operation overone formed by the flap, as before made, are also especially applicable toamputation of the leg. ? 2.—Flap Operation on the Leg. Teales Operation.*—Supposing the circumference of the leg low downto be nine inches, make a long anterior flap of four and a half inches theouter side being formed along the posterior edge of the fibula, and the innerline four and a half inches from this, as shown in Fig. 458. Then, after Fiff. forming this flap as before directed, cut the short flap one-fourth the lengthof the long one. In dissecting up the long flap cut freely, so as to includeall the tissues in front of the tibia, interosseous ligament, and fibula, cut-ting close to the periosteum and interosseous ligament. On reverting thisflap, make the transverse cut on the posterior surface of the leg so as to jointhe two sides of the anterior flap, and dissect back to the extent of two * Op. cltat. 708 PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF SURGERY. inches the short flap; separating the short flap, cut close to the periosteumas high as the point where it is desired to make the section of the this through carefully, so as not to divide the tibia before the fibula isentirely sawn through, then close the sutures,
