When Walter learns thatEvas hand has been promisedby her father to the winnerof the song contest, he re-solves to compete, and remainsfor the examination beforethe meeting of Master-singers. Beckmesser, who alsowishes to marry Eva, is chosenmarker, and under the rigidrules of the order gives Walter so many bad marks that he is rejected in spite of the influ-ence of Hans Sachs in his favor. Act II shows a street, with the houses of Hans Sachs and Pogner on opposite sides. Theapprentices, who are putting up the shutters, plague David on his affection for Magdalena,Evas nurse. Sachs drives them away and sends David to bed, then sits down in hisdoorway
