The E ramparts of Pilsdon Pen Iron Age hillfort, Dorset, England, UK, looking SE to the coast near Bridport. Originally the ditch was deeper & wooden palisades crowned the banks. The ramparts enclose an oval area of roughly 3 hectares at a height of 300m OD. The fort interior (R) contained round houses & a large square wooden building around an open court, possibly a temple or sanctuary. Coins from the last century BC name the local Iron Age tribe as the Durotriges. The fort may have been attacked by the Romans (a ballista bolt was found), it was certainly abandoned after the Roman conquest to be largely used for rough grazing &, in medieval times, for rabbit farming in artificial warrens (pillow mounds).
