In spite of this thespruce forests look dense enough and one would scarcely believethat so much material had been removed. The soil itself is valuedat $50 an acre. The growing of spruce on these high slopes of theHeidelberg forest appears to be particularly remunerative to thecity, as peeled pulp wood brings in the woods a price of $ to$ a cord. The plateau portions of the forests contain considerable Scotchpine of inferior quality which, however, is sold for box material Plate 17. A Spessart oak, estimated to be about 700 years old,containing 9 cords of wood, including veneer logswhich will sell for over $500 29 at $ a cubic meter with bark. This material is in great demandfor the manufacture of ammunition boxes and the recent wars andthe preparations for war seem to have caused a great increase inthe price for the lower grades of Scotch pine. At the base of the mountain slope just above the city is an oldchestnut orchard, planted privately about 125 years ago for the pro-duction of chestnuts. Cheap transportation from the south hasruined the local chestnut market and this orchard, on a slope toosteep for agricultural purposes, was purchased by the city about60 years ago. The trees were originally in rows about 20 feet chestnut logs obtained from this stand are cut into large billetsand exported to Holland where they bring about $20 a thousandboard feet and from them is manufactured tight cooperage for theexp
