Ofthe total gold production, of about $20,000,000 perannum that California now yields, 37%% is won bythe dredges. It is delivered bythe buckets to a big revolving trommel screen fromwhich the fine material passes over rifiles while thecoarse rock is delivered, by means of a belt con-veyor, to the rock pile in the rear. Most of the boatsare held against the bank by steel masts or spudsdropped into the loose ground at the rear of theboat. The dredges are swung backward and for-ward across the face of the cut by wire ropesmanipulated by winches. The whole machine isdriven by electricity. Other important dredgingfields occur east of Marysville, and at Auburn and70 Mines and MiningFolsom near Sacramento. There are a few dredgesin other counties. About half the gold now won in California comesfrom quartz mines. The minor part comes fromhydraulic mines in Trinity, Sierra,
