View SW down the steps of St Euny Holy Well, Chapel Euny, Sancreed, Cornwall, England, UK, once the baptistry for the Medieval chapel which existed here until 1830. The southern of two wells either side of the E-W path on the S edge of Bartinney Downs & W of Carn Euny Iron Age settlement. The N well was used for dipping, the S well for baptism. The water level is below ground level. Reputed to have healing powers into the C18th & C19th, especially for children's diseases & conditions. Chidren were dipped three times in the water then dragged three times clockwise (sunwise) over the grass around the well. Pieces of shaped masonry, possibly from the C15th chapel, have been placed on top of the capstone & rim of the oval chamber. St Euny (Uny) is considered to have been an Early Christian Irish missionary, his sister was St Ia. This photograph was taken in April 2002 with the well overgrown & an offering of picked flowers (bluebells & primulas) left on the steps.
