Wildlife at Martin Mere wetland centre, UK Weather. February 2019. 3pm Shelduck, & Swan feed by WWT Reserve Manager, who distributes wheat & grains to the migratory birds overwintering at the reserve. The conservation rangers at Martin Mere Wetland Centre dispense wheat feed to a myriad of wildfowl, migrant wild ducks, geese, waders, swans, geese and Shelduck and other waterfowl during the winter months.
The reserve, set up by Sir Peter Scott in 1972, is a winter home for up to 2000 Whooper Swans, 14,000 plus pink-footed geese from Iceland, & hundreds of Shelduck from Germany. The regular afternoon feed helps sustain the birds during the cold winter season and gives some relief to local landowners whose vegetable crops are well liked by the migrant birds
