Human umbilical cord blood with 4 red blood cells (erythrocytes) and 2 platelets. Composite coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Umbilical cord blood is blood from a newborn baby's umbilical cord or from the placenta. Cord blood contains, red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), platelets (thrombocytes) and hematopoietic stem cells. Cord blood is a rich source of hematopoietic stem cells, which are precursors to blood cells. It is collected because it contains hematopoietic stem cells, which can be used to treat hematopoietic blood and genetic disorders. Collected cord blood is cryopreserved and then stored in a cord blood bank for future transplantation. Magnification: x1,000 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
