Waterloo Monument, Peniel Heugh, Scottish Borders, Scotland


Built 1817 to 1824 by Archibald Elliot. Inscription reads "To the Duke of Wellington and the British Army William Kerr sixth Marquis of Lothian and his tenantry dedicate this monument 30 June 1815". William Burn's design begun in 1815 collapsed in 1816 during construction. At 48 m or 150 ft the largest man made feature in the central borders. Timber caphouse added in 1867. Top accessible by spiral staircase (now closed). Woodland plantings surrounding the hill said to represent the positions of Wellington's troops at Waterloo.
