After some months in England hecrossed to France in April 1917, and saw somekeen fighting with a Trench Mortar Battery inthe 9th Division, of which the South Africansformed a part. His CO. wrote : For theshort time he served in the Battery he mademany friends, and his loss will be deeply feltby all, not only as a friend but also as an excel-lent soldier. He was killed in action whileserving his guns near Meteren, west of Bailleul,12 July 1918, having seen only three months ofactive 92 IN MEMORIAM.
